WOLFVILLE, N.S. — It’s been a strong start to 2023 on the recruiting trail for Head Coach Darren Burns and the Acadia Axemen Men’s Hockey program.

On Monday, the program announced that they have landed a commitment from Memorial Cup winning goaltender Thomas Couture for the 2023-24 season. Couture is the team’s first commitment in their 2023 recruiting class.

The Axemen announced the news on their Twitter account early on Monday morning, kicking off the second half of the season (and 2023, for that matter) with the news.

“I chose Acadia University because I feel like this is the best place for me to excel on and off the ice,” said Couture in a release posted by the Axemen. “The fit with coach Darren Burns was good and my parents also loved their meeting with him, so this decision wasn’t a really hard one for me.”

“Studying in English and coming back to the Maritimes was a priority for me and Acadia provides me with both.”

Couture hails from Lévis, Quebec, and put together a stellar record with the Lévis Chevaliers. The 5’10” goalie put together a regular season record of 43-5 for the Chevaliers from 2018-2020, which included a perfect 21-0 record during the 2018-19 season.

During that same time frame, Couture went 14-2 in playoff games, including a perfect 6-0 in 2019-20.

Couture’s QMJHL career began in 2019-20 when he appeared in three games for the Rimouski Océanic. He went 2-0-1 in those three appearances.

After splitting the 2020-21 season in the AJHL and MJHL during the COVID-19 pandemic, Couture began the 2021-22 campaign with the Moncton Wildcats. He posted a record of 11-5-2 in 18 appearances with the Wildcats before being acquired by the Saint John Sea Dogs. Couture went 18-1-1 in 22 regular season appearances for the Sea Dogs, who would eventually go onto win the 2022 Memorial Cup.

Now with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies following an off-season trade, Couture has posted a record of 15-7-3 this season through 25 appearances.

In total, Couture has posted a regular season record of 46-13-7 in the QMJHL with the Oceanic, Wildcats, Sea Dogs, and now the Huskies.

With the Axemen losing fifth-year goaltender Conor McCollum at season’s end, Burns and company were looking to bolster their roster with another talented backstop. Now, Couture will form a tandem with former Oshawa Generals goaltender Zachary Paputsakis in 2023-24.

The Axemen return to action on Friday, January 6th when they head on the road to take on the Dalhousie Tigers.
